Kevin Nicholson: Anti-Choice

Kevin Nicholson thinks he should be involved in some of the most personal health care decisions Wisconsinites make. Kevin believes that no one should be able to access abortion care, with zero exceptions, even if the life of the mother is in danger.

But that’s not all. His out of touch, anti-choice positions could even outlaw forms of contraception and jeopardize fertility treatments. Nicholson has also pledged to defund Planned Parenthood, slashing access to basic health care for tens of thousands of Wisconsinites, including those who depend on the organization for  preventive care to keep them healthy like cancer screenings, birth control, and STD testing and treatment.

Kevin’s Agenda:

Eliminate Choice, With Zero Exceptions

Not even an exception if the life of a mother is in danger.

Cut Access to Cancer Screenings for Thousands

Defunding Planned Parenthood would slash access to preventive care in Wisconsin.

Jeopardize Birth Control and Fertility Treatments

Nicholson supports “personhood” legislation that could outlaw some forms of contraception and treatments like IVF.

Slash Protections for Those With Pre-Existing Conditions

Nicholson has supported full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which would jeopardize the 2.4 million Wisconsinites with a pre-existing condition.

Kevin Nicholson: Anti-Choice Without Exception

Kevin Nicholson wants to ban ALL abortions.  Even in cases of rape, incest, or when a mother’s life is in jeopardy. During his failed campaign for U.S. Senate in 2018, he received a perfect “100 percent” rating from Pro-Life Wisconsin, which confirmed to the Associated Press that Nicholson promised to support all of their demands, including:

To ban abortion “in all cases.” Such a stance would not permit exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, or that threaten the life of the mother. [Associated Press, 5/21/18]

Nicholson’s Policies Could Limit Forms of Contraception and Fertility Treatments

Kevin Nicholson pledged to support an extreme “personhood” bill according to the Associated Press. Under “personhood” legislation, fertility treatments such as IVF could be limited:

“Keith Mason, president of Personhood USA, agrees that a personhood statute would change IVF. Personhood USA is a national organization supporting personhood efforts at the state and national level.” [CNN, 8/30/12]

Personhood legislation could drastically reduce access to common forms of contraception:

A constitutional amendment facing voters in Mississippi on Nov. 8, and similar initiatives brewing in half a dozen other states including Florida and Ohio, would declare a fertilized human egg to be a legal person, effectively branding abortion and some forms of birth control as murder.

With this far-reaching anti-abortion strategy, the proponents of what they call personhood amendments hope to reshape the national debate. [New York Times, 10/25/11]

Nicholson Would Slash Access to Cancer Screenings for Thousands of Wisconsinites

Kevin Nicholson has been a long-time supporter of defunding Planned Parenthood. Slashing funds for the organization would jeopardize care for more than 61,000 Wisconsinites through the provider’s 24 health centers across the state.

That means health care for tens of thousands of Wisconsinites would be on the line, the majority of which rely on Planned Parenthood for basic care, including cancer screenings, testing, and access to contraception.

In 2017-2018 alone, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin provided more than 105,000 STD tests, 5,300+ cervical cancer screenings, and 142,000 units of contraceptives. [Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Annual Report]

Despite all of Planned Parenthood’s work to provide care to Wisconsinites, Nicholson has been adamantly opposed, even tweeting “Planned Parenthood is not a healthcare provider; it’s a eugenics shop.”

Nicholson Argued the Supreme Court Should Overturn Roe v. Wade and That Anti-Choice Legislators Should be Pressured to Implement Restrictions

Nicholson has been a solid supporter of removing constitutional protections for abortion and overturning Roe v. Wade and pledged to support judges that agreed with this extreme view:

Nicholson Said He Would “Support Judges That Also View The Constitution As Pro-Life.” According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “‘I believe the Constitution is pro-life,’ Nicholson said, adding that he would ‘support judges that also view the Constitution as pro-life.’” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 7/31/18]

In 2018, Nicholson told the Washington Post that once Roe v. Wade is overturned at the federal level, control would rest with anti-choice Republicans in the Wisconsin State Legislature:

Nicholson: “If the bench does what it should, then the pressure should be on legislators.” [Washington Post, 7/8/18]

If Kevin Nicholson gets his wish and Roe v. Wade is overturned, an existing Wisconsin law criminalizing abortion could once again be enforced, eliminating a person’s ability to make their health care decisions.

“The landmark case of Roe v. Wade in the early 70s legalized abortion throughout the country. Wisconsin’s law criminalizing abortion was never removed from the books, and if Roe was overturned, that law could become the law of the land again”

[FOX6, 12/1/21]

That’s Not All. Kevin Nicholson Wants to Do Even More to Restrict Access to Health Care.

Nicholson Wanted to Strip Health Care Away From Millions

Nicholson wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would result in over 430,000 Wisconsinites losing their health insurance and slash coverage for the 2.4 million Wisconsinites living with pre-existing conditions.

During his failed Senate race, Nicholson was asked whether he supported “A Clean Repeal Of Obamacare,” Nicholson answered “Yes, It Has To Be A Repeal.” [Racine County GOP, 10/18/17]

Nicholson Supported Slashing Medicare

Nicholson supported a radical Republican budget that would’ve slashed nearly $500 billion from Medicare over a decade:

Nicholson Slammed Rand Paul For Voting Against The Republican Budget In The Senate. Q: “What were your thoughts on Rand Paul voting against it?” NICHOLSON: “I think that there’s a whole bunch of Senators, and Rand Paul is one of them, in the middle of this thing, exacting – enforcing – standards that have slowed down progress on everything from health care, to tax cuts, to regulatory cuts. You can’t always get everything perfect, right? We gotta move the ball forward. We need a pro-growth environment. The sooner we get it, the better.” [Kevin Nicholson, Jefferson County Politics & Pints, 10/25/2017] (AUDIO)

Kevin Nicholson’s taking on Rebecca Kleefisch in the Republican primary. He’s even called her ideas “dumb as a bag of hammers,” signaling a messy and divisive primary ahead.
